August 12, 2011

MANDATORY AEA TRAINING needs to be completed TODAY if you have not turned it in to Paula already!!!  Click here to start.

Weekly Memo and Upcoming Events - Each Friday (rain, shine, or .... snow), I will post the Friday Weather Report.  This weekly bulletin includes information and recaps from the past week, news for the upcoming week and any information that will (hopefully) be helpful in keeping us all on the same page.  It is put in place to limit the number of emails from me during the week and a place of reference if you need to find something down the road.  The weekly/monthly calendar is always at the bottom and will be updated regularly.  If you'd like information included in the weekly bulletin, please let me know by Wednesday.  Dates for the calendar can be emailed to Paula or I to be added.

Staff handbook on the Wiki has been updated! Part of your Beginning of the Year Checklist is read through the handbook. Please take the time to read through each section.

Fire Inspection took place yesterday and the good news is we can open school next week. FIRST, what I do need is for everyone to display their tornado and fire escape maps in a visible place by the exit doors (not above the doors - just above a kid's eye level). Rooms they did not find evacuation map in that you either have stored or are missing are below.  If you do not have one, let Paula know and we will get you one ASAP.  SECOND, there has to be an 18" clearance from the ceiling which means you cannot stack boxes, items, etc. on top of your storage shelves/cabinets if it goes above that level. Please take care of this today.
Rooms Missing Emergency Signs
Computer lab, 402, 327, 301, 303, 216, 210, 104, 120, 102, 632, 638, 644

Assessment Information - Rosemary has been working on the password and login information for HEART, NWEA, etc. This information will be distributed late August or early September.

Volunteer Forms - We expect all teachers will use a volunteer form at Open House. If you do not have a volunteer form, When you have your list of volunteers it will be your responsibility to make contacts and set up your classroom and at-home volunteer schedules. Also, by Friday, August 28th please make one copy of your volunteer spreadsheet and…
  • Place a copy in Pam Mefford’s mailbox so she can begin contacting Media Center volunteers.
  • Please keep your original volunteer spreadsheet for your records.
  • Let Doug or Lyndsay know if you do not have ANY parents sign up to volunteer in your classroom.
  • I love the kindergarten teams idea (not sure if you were just thinking out-loud or going to do it) of having a training session for their parent volunteers. Please share with the other BLT members if you are following through with this!
  • Reminder: A district-wide decision was made that NO siblings are allowed to accompany parents when they volunteer at school. If you notice this happening, we ask that you politely discuss this policy with the parent. If necessary, Doug or Lyndsay will follow-up with that parent. Please remind your classroom parents of this rule in your first classroom newsletter.
Monday Morning's Agenda - Enjoy your work day on Friday. Monday's all-staff agenda will be in your "email box" by Friday afternoon. The related arts schedule and other needed items will be in your physical mailbox in the office by Friday afternoon too. Please bring your laptops to the meeting at 10:15 am on Monday!

Curriculum Night is set for Tuesday, August 23.  Each grade level should have a consistent presentation, approximately 20 minutes in length and hosted in each classroom.  Please make sure your communication home to parents at Open House and/or next Friday includes specific times and the date.  Times are as follows:
•  6:00-6:30 (K-1)
•  6:30-7:00 (Related Arts in Library)
•  7:00-7:30 (2-3)
•  7:30-8:00 (4-5)

Final Thoughts for the Week
Where I keep typing/talking and you
don't necessarily have to keep reading/listening.
Have I told you lately how excited I am about the staff we have assembled this year and the direction we are headed? If not - I am. :-) When it is all said and done, we will have 20 new faces on our staff this year. These talented, caring, student-focused educators will add to our already amazing and dedicated professional learning community. I'm pumped about teachers plans to build learning capacity around project based learning and classroom interventions. It will be fun to collaborate and observe our associates work as a professional learning community this year. I can't wait to see teachers collaborate with each other and students to integrate technology into the classroom and curriculum. Our co-teaching schedule will allow more students to be a part of rich and hands-on learning lead by TWO talented teachers. I get giddy listening to teachers and teams talk about collaborating with educators and classrooms well beyond our school walls, community and state! ALL OF THIS...and you continue to put kids, our parents and each other first. It is fun to be part of Maple Grove! Bring on the kids!
