September 30, 2011

Welcome back this past week, Mrs. Grimm!!
Welcome back Shelley Parker on Monday!!!
Say goodbye to Ms. Swyter today and hello to Mrs. Weatherall on Monday...or Tuesday. :-)

Data Collection Follow-Up - I'm in the process of reviewing feedback from PD this week to see what the next steps need to be - BLT will be involved in this process. Also, Leslie and I will be working on our SMART goals for our own supervisors and we both believe we will tie our learning and work in to assessment so we can better serve our collective goals/vision here at MGE. As it was mentioned to you yesterday, the data collection elements that are tight are part of an on-going process. No one expects you to have all elements in place on Monday. Rather it is something we are working toward and we want to support the entire staff in this process. When we are finished with our SMART Goal, we will be sharing them with staff!

ITPDPs - Are due in my office by 8:00 am on Monday morning. Please print an individual behavior and academic/content SMART Goal Action Plan (ITPDP) and sign/date both. Your team can email me one copy of the goal. Benchmarking data should be entered onto the data sheets by then too. If you need extra time, see me ASAP.

Conference sheets are due in the office today (Friday) before you leave!

Start Somewhere Walk will be held across the state next Friday, October 7th, at noon. A schedule from Kara will be in your boxes/email sometime Friday. Please note that we are encouraging all staff to participate in this activity.

Fundraiser Kickoff will also be held on Friday, October 7th, at 3:00 pm. There will be no early out schedule run. Related Arts teachers and those 2nd grade teacher affected have been contacted as to procedure to follow. Kindergarten students should head to gym at 2:50 pm so we can begin as close to 3:00 pm as possible and we will open the lunchroom wall to help move students in and out quickly. We will announce grades following grade levels. I will ask the rep to keep them no longer than 20 minutes and we will open the lunchroom wall so we can exit quickly. :-)

Parent Email Reminder - When sending an email with classroom information to more than one parent, you need to include the email addresses in your "Bcc:" (Blind carbon-copy) line to protect parent information.

After School Procedures - With nearly 125 more students this year and many more students riding the bus than previous years, we need to take a look at how things are going after school. EVERYONE WITH ANY AFTER SCHOOL DUTY should complete the following short survey  http://bit.ly/qH2ese sometime prior to Monday so we can continue to make some positive changes if needed.

Staffing Update - We are down one recess associate (remaining is Cherie & Katharine!) and I hope to fill it early next week!!

At Bat September Winning Team is Related Arts with 8 out of 10 correct!!  Your prize is in your box, but be sure to keep the wrapping on them as I hear they are worth more in the original wrapping!! Please don't get jealous everyone else....just get even (the score, not personally)!  Totals for the month and answer key (two tabs at the bottom) can be found here.  5th grade has their work cut out for them...although I'm thinking of a couple songs I'd like to hear from that pod. :-)  ...didn't have to use the tie-breaker this month, but just in case you're wondering, I sing a mean version of this little ditty and cannot hold a tune on this one.

Final Thoughts for the Week
Where I keep typing/talking and you
don't necessarily have to keep reading/listening.

Be warned - this "Finals Thoughts for the Week" is a bit wordier.

Choose Joy - I have talked to several of you about my friend, Sara, who taught me more from how she lived her life than anything I've learned in school or from nearly everyone else combined.  Even with the ills of life stacked against her, she made the conscience effort to her life to always...

...choose joy.  Sara passed away Saturday night after battling Ankylosing Spondylitis for nearly 20 years and being confined to her apartment for almost 4 years. From the tiny confines of her 2 bedroom apartment, she networked, influenced and changed the lives of 100's, if not 1000's of people with her witty and engaging stories and her mission to choose joy every single day. Although the content of many of her posts have a religious base to them, I'm not promoting that piece of it necessarily (remember you were given permission to stop reading/listening above). I want to highlight how effective communication and the promoting of a positive message can change lives. Through being her friend and reading her blog, I've been able to apply some new learning that I can promote in the public education of young lives...

This job is too stressful not to Choose Joy - I encourage you to read Sara's defining joy post when you have a spare moment. The post may be more for me, but just like laughter is needed in education, joy is needed by every single child who walks into the building, your classroom, the gym, the cafeteria, onto the playground this year.  You hold the key - you have the power - to create a classroom full of joy, full of laughter and full of learning.  No one else has this power.  I've seen time and time again one person in the building 'choose joy' and the contagiousness of this choice is evident throughout the day and building. Yesterday's experience made me track down a Winston Churchill quote last night that I had heard long ago and wanted to share:
A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity;
an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

The effect and impact social media can play in our lives and the lives of our students today. Sara's blog has received over 1 million hits from all over the world. She became good friends with people who shared her illness or similar illnesses and/or shared similar interests. Several of whom traveled great distances to attend her services this week - some who had never met her in person. Our "community" is so much more than Maple Grove and Waukee. We need expand our community beyond the walls through the use of technology. We need to let our student attempt to make an impact on the world they live in through their writing and through opportunities for them to learn from other kids and adults around the world.  I really enjoyed the 1st grade conversation and excitement I heard during PLC+ today as we talked about some possibilities. It is exciting!

Being consistently positive attracts other positive people. At the funeral on Wednesday, Sara had people from all parts of her life (hometown, high school, college, work and her social media community). Every person I met was just as positive as her and several of us questioned after the service whether she just attracted positive people or whether she made us positive people. I believe it was the latter...as I often have to throw her "Choose Joy" picture in front of me to make me realize my current "pain" is not really that big of a deal in the whole scheme of things. You are the captain of your classroom or your team meeting or your department - you attract what you give off. We have lots of game-changers in our building who can bring that positive mo-jo to our students, parents and school!

If you've read this far - I appreciate you sharing in the celebration of life of my friend, Sara. I hope I can   use her examples to be a better colleague, principal and community servant for each and every one of you. Enjoy your weekend and celebrate the joys you've been given.

He who laughs, lasts
Doug

September 26, 2011 - Tuesday Update

AT-BAT SHEETS FOR SEPTEMBER DUE ON WEDNESDAY!!

Gym Closed Thursday - Work will be going on in the gym this Thursday (putting in blinds and hooking up the power to the projector) so PE classes will be outside. If you have PE on Thursday, make sure your students dress appropriately by letting your parents know.

Fire Drill Feedback
  • Students moved outside quickly and quietly! Thank you for your leadership.
  • Thank you to everyone who helped! All-hands-on-deck was needed!
  • If you had students who had troubles exiting that we are not aware of, please let me know so we can create a plan for them in case of a real fire.
  • Not all rooms have signs posted or were not in a visible location. If you do not have one, email me today as these should have been posted in August.
  • ALWAYS have a list of students in your sub plan folder. Not all lists were present today and some subs didn't have a list. This is a safety concern.
Wednesday PD will begin at 2:05 pm and the agenda will be completed by the end of the day and can be found on our shared Google.doc. I will be at a funeral tomorrow in Algona so PD will be facilitated by Leslie and BLT members. There will be ample time for teams to follow up on prior PD (artifact collection, goal setting & student reflection and ITPDPs - BLT members will share focus tomorrow if they have no already). Meeting notes should be posted on the PLC Log.  Thanks for your work in advance.

September 23, 2011

Staff Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday) at 8am. Fifth grade is bringing treats and I'll have a quick opening activity before Jeff Longman speaks and I talk about some Reading Lab and problem solving updates.

Friendly Recess Reminder - Until it gets cold, teachers should go outside to pick up their students from recess. This helps our associates get to their next duty (often being covered by another classroom teacher) more quickly. They have commented how much better it is when this happens. It is not the first reminder so please stick to it until the weather requires a coat.

Communication - While Lynday is gone, if you have something pressing to talk to me about (student discipline, parent concerns, instructional questions, etc.), I would suggest calling, stopping in or catching me in the hallway. As I've mentioned to a couple of you already, my email moves up my screen quickly right now and I'm reading/skimming all of it but responding to "must respond" items at this point. :-) Thanks.

PTO Presentations - I would LOVE to have a teacher or group of teachers present at each of our PTO meetings this coming school year. I've put a list of dates and some ideas on the shelf in front of the mailboxes. Please sign up - it would be a great way to meet Iowa Teaching Standards 1, 7 and 8 for your portfolio no matter what year in the cycle you are this year!

Projector Bulbs - It is EXTREMELY important you shut your projectors off when you are not using them as replacing them is EXTREMELY expensive. A new bulb is $196 and change. Wow.  Once the bulb goes over 500 hours, it is not covered by the warranty. If your bulb does go out, please contact Carrie immediately.

Student data and your ITPDP will be due Friday, September 30th. An hour of our PD next Wednesday will be available for your team to dig deeper into the "fresh" data from DIBELS, MAP, Benchmarking, etc., and finalize ITPDPs.

AESOP provides each teacher an opportunity to 'rate' your substitute. Looking at the data from the start of the last March until today, teachers are only rating subs at a 5% rate. The rating is one of the factors I use when trying to locate a sub (call them first) so if you can quickly rate your sub after your leave, it would be helpful data to have. If you do not know how to do this, check with a colleague first and then ask me. Speaking of subs...we have about 25 who have been added to the pool so it will help to provide feedback on these new subs as they begin to trickle in our building!

Recycled punches can be placed in the basket by the mailboxes. These are extremely useful to our lunch/recess associates (and me!) to grab before they go into the lunchroom.

The Early Out Schedule has been added to the wiki under Staff Handbook. Make sure you have the latest and greatest one by looking here.

Weekly Admin/Instructional Coaches Meeting - If you're interested and have extra time on your hands, you can always check out our weekly meeting minutes and agendas. We meet each Tuesday morning (listed as Admin/IC Mtg) Click on "More Details" to see

Website Spotlight - Check out Mrs. Bebout's webpage and Ms. Miller's webpage. Creative stuff!! If you don't have the word "blog" next to your name on our staff page, please email your site link to Carrie soon!

YouTube Launches Site for Teachers on September 21st!  The new channel: YouTube.com/Teachers, a guide to using videos in class. Teachers can follow tips that show everything from organizing videos to sparking lively discussions to help struggling students through videos.. Teachers can also sign up to become part of a YouTube Teachers Community, a mailing list that allows them to share ideas and best practices.

That wraps up the 10 songs from Group A! Teams should turn in their
score cards before the end of PD on September 28th.

Lost Highway - Bon Jovi

The tie-breaker for the month of September: Rank order the songs to the right as to how often Doug has karaoke-ed these songs in public sing he graduated from college. The amounts are 25+ times, 5+ times and 1 time (he wasn't allowed to finish this one either).  Write it on your sheet.

Group A includes: Bebout, T.Broich, Crannell, Grote, Hedrick, Kirby, R.Miller, Ochoa, Robinson, Sheldon

Doug's Karaoke List

September 20, 2011 (mid-week update)

A few almost-mid-week announcements that can't wait until the FWR...

  • School pictures in the boxes today. PLEASE PLEASE everyone send them home with kids today. If they ALL go home today then it avoids a dozen phone calls tonight about "why did my son get his but not my daughter?"  Great question that I'd like to avoid this year.  If you're a score keeper, I'm 0-9 over the past 10 years as an administrator on accomplishing this specific task (this should be a secure SBO for me) so let's start a winning streak today. :-)
  • CELEBRATION - Our recess and lunch associate positions have been filled!  In addition to our rock-star associate, Kelli Sparks, we are adding Katharine Houghton and Cherie (shuh-REE) Rau to our lunch and recess associates! They will all be here in full-force come Monday.  Please take time to introduce yourselves.
  • Staff meeting Friday morning at 8:00 am - 5th grade is bringing treats (yeah!) and I will be talking about our PS process and reading lab. 3-5 teachers will be dismissed when we get to reading lab.

Thursday, September 15, 2011

September 16, 2011

Data Entry - Please begin (or continue) to enter the fall data onto the Google.doc forms. It never hurts to download a copy of the grade level sheet once you've entered your data! Click on the following sequence: "File : Download As : Excel"  If you have questions, let me know. I will download a final copy once all data has been entered for fall.

Phone calls - If you call a parent, community member or anyone from your classroom phone, please leave a message. Not a day goes by where we don't get a call from someone who says, "I had a missed call from this number. What did you need?" Leaving a message solves that problem.  Thanks!!!

Website Spotlight of the Week: Many of our staff blogs are up and going! I'll try to spot light one each week so this week check out Alissa Sheldon's site! Her latest blog includes an embedded link to Scholastic and ideas for parents to do at home.  Website tips of the week...(1) Clean up your site! Many of the sites have pages/information that was designed as a template. Delete or change them soon. (2) Please do not contact Flying Hippo directly if you have questions or problems.  Instead, work with Carrie and Doug.  Keep up the good work and continue to share successes and ideas.

Next Week Calendar Highlights include Monday's PLC-Tech Integration 8am meeting and MAP beginning for 3rd-5th; Thursday's SPED team meeting (8am), PLC+ for K and 2nd grade and Barry attending Instructional Rounds at Eason; and our...

Next Staff Meeting is set for Friday, September 23, 8:00 am. The Community Education director, Jeff Longman, will introduce himself and our staff will take some time to discuss Instructional Rounds as we will be hosting it in October this year. If a team would like to volunteer for breakfast treats and another team for the team builder, I would appreciate it.  No volunteers - we will just go without. :-) No worries.

Staffing Update - Thresa Stone has moved from recess/lunch associate to a full-time associate in Koenig's room. We also lost another recess/lunch associate so I will be interviewing for two positions soon!! If you know someone (parent/neighbor) interested, please send them my way ASAP!

DonorsChoose.Org - It appears Horace Mann may have another matching incentive on Donor's Choose this coming fall. I will let you know about it as soon as I find out!  PLEASE COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING FORM NOW IF YOU HAVE A PROJECT ON DONOR'S CHOOSE THAT WAS FILLED OR HAVE ONE CURRENTLY POSTED OVER THE PAST YEAR. I NEED ACCURATE AMOUNTS TO REPORT OUT.  If you do not remember exact amount, please estimate. THANKS!!

At-Bat Song Contest Continues!
I'm sure there is some correlation between these two songs this week!
This month does include 10 staff members so if your September score
card includes more than that, let me know and I'll give you your new one.
Flogging Molly - Drunken Lullabies
I've Been Everywhere - Johnny Cash

Two more songs next
week and we wrap
up September and
Group A! Good luck!

Group A includes: Bebout, T.Broich, Crannell, Grote, Hedrick, Kirby, R.Miller, Ochoa, Robinson, Sheldon

ANTI-PRIZE Reminder: Team with the lowest score for the year has to sing one of the songs chosen by the winning team at a spring staff meeting!!

September 9, 2011

Progress Report Rubrics - Before September 14th's PD, become familiar with the Progress Report Rubrics presented during September 6th ELA PD. Record questions or clarifications your team has - those can be emailed to Leslie and the ELA team members (Pals, Jones, Beavers).

DIBELS & Benchmarking - is in full swing next week!  To help with communication, please keep everyone (especially Paula) informed of your testing locations.  Also, please help our many substitutes next week by...
- making them feel welcome in the hallways and office!
- having comprehensive and detailed lesson plans ready to go!
- prepping your students if needed!!

There will also be a rep here from Mind Streams Education here that day from 11am-1pm to meet with any interested staff about their educational opportunities. They will be in the lounge and information about them is located on the lounge bulletin board.

Concept PLC Opportunties begin next week! RTI and Project Based Learning PLC teams will meet on Monday. If you're interested in joining the team and checking it out, please show up or contact one of the facilitators listed below. A reminder that you can always contribute or follow their work by viewing their PLC log or using the following hashtags on Twitter (#mgerti, #mgepbl, #mgecoteach, #mgetech). I encourage everyone to share resources and ideas in this fashion OR to seek out resources from other educators across the nation and world via Twitter...and share your learning with your team(s).

Optional Meeting for those on the Evaluation Cycle - Don't quite understand the evaluation process?  I will meet with teachers after PD on Wednesday in the library to cover the basics of what to expect this year!  Please bring your Danielson book, Enhancing Professional Practice - A Framework for Teaching. New teachers to Waukee who cannot attend are strongly encouraged to find time to meet with Lyndsay or Doug before your formal observation week! Returning staff members on cycle are welcome to join us Monday too!

Twitter 101: Round 2 - will take place soon. This would be for staff who missed our Tweet-Up this summer or for anyone wanting a refresher. I will get an email out on Friday or early next week to let you know when that will take place!! Until then,

Laminator is broken again. We will let you know when it is resurrected or buried and replaced. We understand the inconvenience of not having it so when it is fixed or replaced there will likely be very specific directions so it does not continue to happen.

Promote Maple Grove - One great way to engage our parents and community members to be partners in a meaningful way (from Waukee's Theory of Action) is to have information posted in our newsletter and local newspaper(s).  If you have an upcoming event you'd like to highlight or want to share a neat learning activity your students have been involved in, please get those articles (with pictures if possible) to Paula by Tuesday afternoon.  We will include the information in our building newsletter and/or submit it for the "Every School - Every Thursday" article on the Des Moines Register.  If you're posted that type of information on your blog and would like to push it out to more people, just copy and paste the link/information in an email to Paula!!

At-Bat Song Contest Begins This Month!
The flash-from-the-past continues this week as two of the three At-Bat songs
are pre-many-of-you. Stuck in the Middle release date almost coincides with my own
release date! ;-) I must admit that I attended my first Journey concert in the early 90's
and saw them again 4 years ago. Wow. Not only had the band aged but so had
the crowd. :-) Good luck matching this week!
Don't Stop Believing - Journey
Stuck in the Middle - Steelers Wheel
Feeling Good - Michael Buble'

AT-BAT
Group A includes: Bebout, T.Broich, Crannell, Grote, Hedrick, Kirby, R.Miller, Ochoa, Robinson, Sheldon, Steenhoek.
ANTI-PRIZE determined: team with the lowest score has to sing one of the songs chosen by the winning team at a spring staff meeting!! I love it.

September 2, 2011

SAY CHEESE!!

Friday is Picture Day!

Sept 6 PD - Each of you should have received an invitation to view the PD planning calendar on Google.docs.  This would include the agendas for each PD as we approach them. When the agendas are set, you will be notified to view this planning document. If you did not receive access and need it, please let me know. For September 6th, we will begin with a light snack at 8:00 am. Please bring your laptops.

Cumulative Folders for all returning students are organized!  Please take time over the next week to review your students' folders.  We have had a lot of new students this year and they will be placed ASAP. As you review new files, if you note any information that needs to be shared (504, IEP, speech, counseling, etc.), please let the office know immediately.  This would apply to new students who move in during the year. Fifth grade teachers should also look for high math scores to screen for math placement. As students move in, Paula will always email the classroom teacher, principals and related arts staff when new kids start at Maple Grove and notify you when the cumulative file arrives.

Phone Calls - I've been meaning to post this on the FWR since it was mentioned to me last June but keep forgetting. Phones in the classroom will not call out long distance and this is standard across the district. I did put in a tech request this week to get the conference rooms and office lounge phones updated so staff may call out long distance on those phones. I will let you know when they are ready to go.

Laminator - A service call was placed on Monday. The laminator had a roller replaced and it was serviced on Tuesday. Wednesday, the laminator was found with the cover off and not working properly again. No one notified the office.  This is too expensive of equipment not to use correctly and if issues arise, the office needs notified immediately. Some quick tips everyone needs to follow:

  • Do not use the laminator if you don't know how to use it. Ask a friend to show you.
  • Do not have parents use it if they have not been trained.
  • If something 'breaks', stop and call the office. Do not take it apart or pull anything out.

Gym Project - A projector will be installed in the gym next Friday, September 9th. While they are installing it, we cannot have anyone in the gym.  If you have PE that day, please let your students know that it will take place outside unless we have rain. Mr. Harris will work with you as to where you will meet him for PE that day.

Classroom Newsletter - Thank you to staff members who have been including me on your e-communication home to parents. If you want to include me on your e-newsletter to parents (or share your link), that would be great!  FOR NOW, The link to the building newsletter, The Branch, will be emailed to teachers on Friday.  Please forward it on to your parent email list.  IF YOU NEED PAPER COPIES FOR FAMILIES who do not have access to email, you should have already notified Paula as to how many.

As a reminder...
Students should be returning the inclement weather transportation form and the field trip permission form. Both of these forms stay in your classroom, and it is your responsibility to track who has/has not returned them.  If you need additional copies, let Paula know.

Theory of Action Focus
Providing high quality customer service throughout the organization
I appreciate everything that each of you have done these first two weeks of school to make every child feel safe at school and every parent feel good about their child being a part of our Maple Grove family. Many staff have been going the extra mile to make our students and parents feel special and welcomed at Maple Grove.  Now that our first couple weeks have flown by, it might be easier to stay in your room after school, make less contacts, or become focused on all those things that need to get done.  Please continue to make that extra effort to reach out to parents, students and the community throughout the year to make Maple Grove THE place to learn, grow and work.

At-Bat Song Contest Begins This Month!
I picked these three songs from Group A to get us started. It really told me quite a bit about these three staff members. It was nice to see some At-Bat songs from the 80's. Reminded me of junior high dances and socials...the scary thing is it was the decade when many of you were born. Ouch.
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Chicken Friend - Zac Brown Band
Whip It - DEVO

AT-BAT KICK OFF!

September will includes At-Bat songs from Group A. Work as a team to correctly match as many songs to staff members as you can! Group A includes: Bebout, T.Broich, Crannell, Grote, Hedrick, Kirby, R.Miller, Ochoa, Robinson, Sheldon, Steenhoek. GOOD LUCK!
