February 25, 2011

Print - During budget meetings with teams, the question about EDM and FOSS copies came up.  Those copies would run through Leslie and more information will come to everyone down the road.  Do not worry about it now!  Keep the questions about budget coming and AEA print coming.  :-)

Conferences - Paula should have final copies of your conference schedule before you leave this week! If you have a conference you would like Lyndsay or I to attend, please let us know that soon. Lyndsay will be at Maple Grove on March 9th as I will be at my own children's conferences.

Yearbook Pictures - If you have pictures on your computer this year that would be good to include in the yearbook, please email a few very good ones to Laura Reynolds (laurareynolds75@hotmail.com).  She will be in the building on Friday, and possibly another day or two, to take pictures of kids in specials, lunch and recess.

Department of Education Site Visit is coming to Waukee soon!  Waukee Community Schools will be participating in a Site Visit from the Iowa Department of Education March 8-10.  Site visits occur every five years and offer a school district the opportunity to gather feedback about current programs and practices and recommendations on how to improve these programs and practices.  A major part of this process is the interviews the members of the site visit team will conduct throughout the three day visit. In addition to Maple Grove being one of the host buildings, we have a number of staff and parents involved in the interviews this go-around.  To see an overview of the schedule and to see who from our team will be involved, visit the Site Visit tab!

Waukee Academy - Connie Tow is in the process of building the summer programming for students.  Proposals are due in before Spring Break.  She would like to visit with interested staff members at Maple Grove and be available to answer questions from staff about how to teach for Waukee Academy.  She will be available on Thursday, March 3rd, in the library from 8:00-8:30 am.  Stop in if you have questions or are planning on teaching!  If you have questions please email her.

Calendar - Starting this week, for upcoming events, I'll have you refer to the Google Calendar at the bottom of the webpage versus including the two week summary grid.  Feedback welcome and if I get enough people tell me to bring it back, I will.  :-)

Final Thoughts for the Week
...where I keep talking/typing and you
don't necessarily have to continue listening/reading.

I really don't have anything witty to say this week [insert your funny comment here such as "When do you?"] but would much rather steer you to read Dr. Wilkerson's article in this week's Waukee District Bulletin. While I was reading it, I thought about all of you.  I've seen the innovative things you each do at times to engage students at high levels of thinking. You do a wonderful job and you share your innovative ways with your colleagues. As I've mentioned and questioned us in previous FWR FTFTW :-) ...are we happy with where we are?  Is this it? Have we reached the peak of educational greatness?

I will be challenging the Building Leadership Team Monday morning to examine where we have been and begin to plan the roadmap to where we want to go...not an end point, but rather a continuous road map, a journey per se, to meet the needs of our students today so they are prepared for a world that we don't yet fully understand ourselves.  It's a challenge...one I know we can continue to rise up to meet.  Enjoy the weekend and when you finish reading the article, here are a couple more sites to visit if you're still 'hungry'....

Iowa Future  http://iowafuture.org - The world is changing. We need to change with it.

A great video where Chris Lehman talks about creating the schools we need.
